The Existing Property:
The existing 1960s bungalow is located in a semi-rural, private location in Alresford, and is in desperate need of updating. The plot is within the settlement boundary meaning there is less restriction in terms of adding floor space, and the site has great views in every direction. The existing footprint provides three bedrooms with an approximate floor area of 165m2 and a split-level arrangement following the slope of the site.
The approach to this redesign was to move all the bedroom accommodation to a new first floor, which could be built efficiently using lightweight SIPs (structural insulated panels), generating a total floor area of 330m2. This gives the bedrooms great views from an elevated position, whilst providing scope for large living spaces on the ground floor. The latter is spread over a split-level arrangement linking to outside living areas on all sides, meaning there is always somewhere benefitting from direct sunlight.
Externally, traditional materials have been used in conjunction with large glazed areas to create contemporary detailing and allowing the building to sit comfortably in its rural setting. Overhanging roof projections have been incorporated to create shade over glazed elements in the summer but allowing the lower winter sun in and making use of solar gain to create a comfortable internal environment. A triple garage has been added to create enclosure on approach.
