The existing property:
This three bedroom 1920s cottage is situated on a large plot in a semi-rural area, with a footprint of 200m2. The house has been turned around so that the frontage has been converted into the rear, with the driveway repositioned and the front door remaining in its existing position. This results in a weak approach.
The challenge here is to re-orientate the front entrance whilst creating additional better-quality bedroom and living spaces, to compete with the larger houses in the area. There is also the need to create character, which has been lost as a result of the poorly considered changes.
Our design carefully retains the existing structural lines of the property while adding subservient two storey extensions to each side, forming additional living accommodation, a double garage and an additional two bedrooms.
A glazed oak frame frontage creates an impressive double height entrance hall with a feature staircase and gallery landing.
Externally, a mix of materials including a slate roof, render, oak and natural stone finish the look. Inside, open plan living is achieved, with large openings on to the rear garden making the most of the south aspect. The design results in a total of 345m2 achieving five bedrooms, three with en suites.
